It began with the idea of an AI companion: sharp, funny, capable of pushing back. Something to think with, not just something to ask.
The builder remembers the early Skippy idea: a fictional AI companion as inspiration, and conversations with AI that helped the idea take shape. The surviving project description picks up with a voice-interactive partner. The conversations before that are not yet a complete record.
The interesting question was not whether a machine could sound impressive. It was how far a person could go with an AI beside them.
The relationship came before the system.
